Many blues-oriented and blues-friendly artists will go their entire careers without ever providing a live album, which is regrettable because live performances are such an important part of the blues experience. Ana Popovic, thankfully, isn't one of them. This 67-minute CD is the Yugoslavian singer/guitarist's third album for Ruf Records, and it is also her first live album. Recorded at an Amsterdam, Holland, show on January 30, 2005 (when Popovic was 28), the disc paints a consistently exciting picture of her talents as a live performer. Popovic is as captivating on the aggressive, confident strut of "My Man" and Howlin' Wolf's "Sittin' on Top of the World" as she is on the moody, dusky jazziness of "Won't Let You Down" and the instrumental "Navajo Moon" (which was written in memory of the late Stevie Ray Vaughan, one of her major influences). Although very blues-friendly, Ana! Live in Amsterdam isn't strictly a document of a blues show — rather, it is a document of a show in which the blues meet rock, soul, funk, and jazz. An interesting point: although Popovic grew up in the former Yugoslavia and is performing for a Dutch audience on this album, all of her introductions to the songs are in English — the language that remains a common denominator for blues performers and blues fans all over the world. These days, rock and hip-hop are being performed in a variety of languages other than English, but English remains the official language of the blues — even if the performer is as much of a non-purist as Popovic, whose excellent Ana! I had never heard any of Ana's material prior to receiving this DVD/CD live set on Ruf Records. Despite having read good things about Ana on various websites, I was perhaps just a little leery that such a pretty young thing (29 when this set was recorded) could really "get" the blues, particularly given the rather obvious attempt by Ruf to capitalize on Ana's obvious assets in marketing this project. I needn't have worried. Ana is the real deal, with a lot to offer to the often boring world of modern blues music (particularly that of "Women in the blues").

Ana originally hails from Belgrade but has chosen Holland as home base for her blossoming career. She has garnered much acclaim in Europe for her work on her two CD's, 2001's Hush! and Comfort To The Soul from 2003. She was the first European ever nominated for "Best New Artist" at Memphis' annual W.C. Handy awards in 2003 and was also nominated in the "Best Blues Album" category at the 2004 Jammie Awards in New York City.

This concert was filmed at the Melkweg in Amsterdam January 30th 2005, a superb looking blues venue indeed. Aided by the workmanlike rhythm section of Fabrice Ach (bass), Denis Palatin (drums) and the very talented Dominique Vantomme (keyboards), Ana scorches through 12 tunes ranging from blues ballads through jazz blues excursions to up-tempo blues rock crunchers. Ana's pleasant competent vocals suit the tunes nicely although a bit gruffer delivery might be nice on some of the raunchier rockier tunes. The guitar work is very accomplished indeed covering the gamut of the blues rock spectrum from delicate volume swells to bottleneck to screaming full blown Strat rock blues tone and attack. Highlights include the poignant solo on "Hometown", the excellent lines on the tribute to SRV and Ronnie Earl "Navajo Moon" the slide fest on "Bigtown Playboy", the clean jazzy runs on "Won't Let You Down" and the obvious Vaughisms on both "Longway Home" and "My Man".

Ana Popović's father first introduced her to the blues, through an extensive record collection and sessions hosted at the family home. Popović founded her first serious band at age nineteen. Within a year, she was playing outside of Yugoslavia and opening shows for American blues icons like Junior Wells. By 1998, her band was doing 100 shows annually and appearing regularly on Yugoslavian television. Her debut CD, Hometown, provided a first glimpse of her talents as a singer and guitarist.
In 1999, Popović relocated to the Netherlands to study jazz guitar. She quickly became a fixture on the Dutch blues scene and soon ventured into neighboring Germany. With Comfort to the Soul (2003), Popović delivered another diverse package of blues, rock, soul and jazz.

She and her band won the prestigious jazz award ‘Jazz a Juan-Revelation 2004’ in Juan Le Pins, France. The award shows recognition of Ana’s abilities in the jazz genre — a strong influence on her music.

During the ‘Rhythm & Blues Fest’ in Peer, Belgium, Ana is invited on stage by ‘The King of Soul’, Solomon Burke, who immediately invites her to join him as a special guest for the rest of his tour.

Ana was chosen to be part of the European ‘Jimi Hendrix Tribute tour’ in 2002. Ana also joins various artists Eric Burdon, Taj Mahal and Buddy Miles on a Jimi Hendrix tribute CD: ‘Blue Haze’.

Upon forming her first band, Hush, she immediately began making waves in her home country, and was performing a hundred shows annually and making regular appearances on Yugoslavian television.

Initially embraced by the blues music community, Ana is the first European ever nominated for ‘Best New Blues Artist’ at the W.C. Handy Award Show in Memphis, Tennessee (2003). She was also nominated for 'Best Blues Album' at the Jammie Awards in New York City, a three way nominee for 'Best Vocalist', 'Best Guitarist' and 'Best Album' at the French Blues Awards (2002).

In 2007, Ana Popovic set her sights on the U.S. and signed her first American record deal with the Los Angeles based Delta Groove Music. The subsidiary label Eclecto Groove Records was then formed and created to support Ana’s diverse and eclectic approach to music. Produced by Grammy Award winning producer John Porter and David Z., “Still Making History" signified Ana’s first official entry into the U.S. market and it was a smashing success. The album spent a total of 19 weeks on the Billboard blues chart and hit its peak position at #3!
